Step 1:
Starting at the top of your drawing space, create the frosting by drawing the tip of a swirl. When drawn correctly, it should look like a curved water drop. And, of course, you can make the frosting appear as big or as small as you prefer. Remember to draw from top to bottom, so you have enough room to draw the whole cupcake and its wrapper. Here’s a helpful tip: to make sure the cupcake is drawn in the middle, you can draw horizontal and vertical lines on the paper to act as reference lines.
Step 2:
Now that you’ve drawn the frosting tip in the previous step, it’s time to finish the top layer. Draw a curved line on either side of the frosting tip to create a layer of frosting. Make sure the two ends of the line are close to each other but not meeting. When drawing the icing, it’s important to remember that you’re working from top to bottom, not the other way around. This means that the next layers of frosting will be drawn just below the previous one.
Step 3:
Underneath the top layer of frosting, draw an oval shape directly attached to it. This will be the next layer of icing swirl. The oval shape should not look too firm; rather, it should feel as soft as a pillow. Don’t worry about making it equal. The more uneven the swirls, the more realistic they will be.
Step 4:
Then, just below the previous layer, draw another oval shape larger than the previous one. This will serve as a swirl in the middle of the frosting.
Step 5:
Now we are going to work on the last layer of frosting. Add another swirl layer below the previous layer by drawing a slightly larger oval shape. Make sure each layer of frosting from top to bottom is larger than the last. The size of the swirls from top to bottom should be from smallest to largest, quite similar to forming a Christmas tree.
Step 6:
Just below the frosting, draw a cube shape. Note that the icing swirls should be larger than the wrapper. This will thicken the frosting on top of the cupcake, making it more appetizing.
Step 7:
To create the illusion of a folded wrapper, draw parallel, angled vertical lines down the length of the wrapper. This will make the wrapper, as well as the cupcake itself, more realistic.
Step 8:
Cupcakes and other sweet treats would only be complete with lots of sprinkles. So, of course, we will add sprinkles to this cupcake design. You should do it too! Now it’s time to finish your design by adding trim. As you can see in the illustration, we added a cherry on top, but feel free to draw any topping you want. After all, it’s your work of art!
